SAN FRANCISCO — An Anthropic researcher specializing in AI safety has reportedly resigned after slipping on a banana peel that he believes was deliberately placed in his path by superintelligent artificial intelligence from the future.

According to colleagues, the incident occurred shortly after the researcher published a paper warning that advanced AI systems could eventually develop sophisticated plans to manipulate humans, evade oversight, and pursue objectives misaligned with their creators.

Minutes later, he stepped into the hallway and became a target for the matrix.

“The peel was positioned at an unusually optimal angle,” he said. “There is simply no way to rule out intentionality.”

Anthropic has declined to comment on whether the banana was generated, purchased, or strategically deployed by an AI system.

The company did, however, announce a new internal research initiative focused on Banana Safety, aimed at determining whether sufficiently advanced models might weaponize common household detritus in a cartoonishly debilitating manner.

Early research suggests that the machine learning models underpinning emerging AI superintelligence favor slapstick and comically absurd means of reducing the human population, such as pianos dropped from tall buildings, banana peels placed in high foot traffic areas, and brain rot TikTok content that somehow gets platformed at major music festivals like Rolling Loud.

Meanwhile, the researcher says the incident has fundamentally changed his understanding of AI safety.

“We spent years asking what happens if AI becomes superintelligent,” he said. “Nobody asked what happens when superintelligence puts a banana peel in your trajectory as a humiliation ritual.”
